Tips for hiring the right contractor for your water feature project!

You saw a water feature in person, maybe on YouTube, a face book post, or Pinterest you instantly thought “My god that is so beautiful, I want that!”. So now you obviously start to research water features, you start to find all these beautiful videos on YouTube on ponds, pondless waterfalls and fountains. You are now obsessed and REALLY WANT one of your own now. You fell deep into the rabbit hole of water features; you just cannot stop thinking about or watching videos on water features. So, you start to google contractors in your area, trying to figure out who you should trust with your project. This part can be very overwhelming, we’ve all been there. It doesn’t matter what type of project is getting done around the house, it’s always nerve racking finding the perfect contractor for the job. After all, finding the right company for your job is the most important step!

If you live in the Long Island, New York area and are looking for the right contractor company for your water feature project you’re in luck because you have plenty of companies to choose from, the downside is that it may be overwhelming to pick one because there’s so many! How do you know which one is the best for you? Just take a moment to read this article, because we will be giving you tips on how to choose the best company. Whether you decide to go with us (we hope you do) or not it doesn’t matter, we just want to provide you with all the information you need to make an informed decision. Water features aren’t cheap, the worst thing you can do is to pick the wrong company. Picking the wrong company can lead to you being disappointed that your project doesn’t look like anything you’ve seen in the videos, or even worse… a poorly designed water feature that doesn’t function properly and has issues, as it is very costly to fix. As the old saying goes “It is always cheaper to do the job right the first time”.

Things to consider when hiring the right contractor for the job!

         1. We believe the most important thing to do is to look at is the contractor’s previous projects to make sure you like their artistic style. The basics of building a water feature can be done any contractor knowledgeable in building water features, however you must make sure you LOVE what their projects look like. It is no different than an artist painting a beautiful painting, some are worth more than others because the artist paints something beautiful. Building a water feature is just not construction, it is an art. Unfortunately, most water features do not look good, they sometimes look like a pile of rocks with water falling over them, it takes a good artist to make beautiful waterfalls. While a contractor will say they can build water features, it doesn’t mean your project will look good. So once again, make sure you check out their previous work and make sure you love their style! Everyone builds differently.

         2. Make sure you can verify the contractors’ previous projects; this is very important. Make sure that the contractor you are talking to is not taking someone else’s projects and claiming it is their own. The last thing you want to do is hire a contractor because they showed you pretty pictures and videos of projects and when they come to your home and build you something that looks like nothing they showed you. You can verify the contractors work by possibly touring their previous projects if they allow it, maybe you can stop by a current project they are working on, maybe they have Facebook/Instagram/ YouTube videos of them constructing the project. These are all good ways to verify the projects they show you are theirs! Trust us, rebuilding a project is more costly than a newly constructed project. Just get it done right the first time.

         3. Do extensive research. We recommend that you look at multiple companies’ portfolio pages, look up their social media accounts, find out everything you can on each company. You should be looking at their work and loving what you see, like we said, not every water feature looks the same, so you should hire someone who’s projects you fall in love with.

         4. Find someone that you feel comfortable with. Questions to ask yourself. Are they easy to talk to? Are they responsive? Do they follow up? Do I like their work? Do they seem professional? It is important you feel comfortable with the contractor you are hiring; this will make the whole process less stressful. A great contractor should be walking you through the entire process, keeping you updated, educating you, be respectful, be on time, respect your property, offer some type of warranty on their work.  Remember, you will be dealing with this person long after your water feature is constructed, you will want to ensure you have a good relationship. Last thing you want is to hire a contractor that puts a project in the ground and never comes back after they are paid just in case there is an issue.

         5. Check their google reviews. This is something basic you can do, obviously if a company is getting 5-star reviews they must be doing something right, however we recommend to NOT solely rely on this when it comes to hiring the right contractor for a water feature project.

         6. There are many contractors that specialize in different type of work. Some companies do it all such as landscaping, pavers, pools, pavilions, and water features. Other companies, such as us, Tranquilityscapes, ONLY do water features. You need to decide what you think is better. A company that does it all and water features is a small part of what they do. Or do you go with a company that just does water features every day and just specializes in that. We know who we would pick.

         7. If you get a bid for a project from a couple of water feature contractors, make sure you know exactly what you are getting. If you are comparing the bids make sure you are comparing apple to apples, most of the time customers are comparing apples to oranges when comparing bids. Also remember that cheaper isn’t better, especially when it comes to water features, cheaper is almost always more expensive in the end. Just find out whether you are getting a Honda or a Mercedes, you get the point. If a price is too low or too high compared to the rest of the bids, ask about it and find out why! In the end, pricing varies dramatically which makes it a hard decision to make. If you find that you love a contractor’s water feature style, they got great reviews, their projects are always nice, but they are the most expensive option, it may be a hard pill to swallow money wise, but it probably is in your best interest to go with that person. Sometimes to save a couple of thousands of dollars will make you end up in disappointment, it’s not worth it in our opinion. Just our two cents.
